Singapore

Singapore has a dozen hospitals and health centres with JCI accreditation. In 1997 (published 2000), the World Health Organisation ranked Singapore's health care system 6th best in the world and the highest ranked system in Asia.

Patients travel from neighbouring countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia and now they have a growing number of patientstravelling from Indochina, South Asia, the Middle East and Greater China. Patients from developed countries such as the U.S. and the U.K. are also beginning to choose Singapore as their medical travel destination. This is due to the fact that a relatively affordable health care service, in a clean cosmopolitan city can be achieved in Singapore.

Singapore recently launched the region’s first cardiology clinic catering especially for the needs of women. This is in recognition of the fact that cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) is the top killer among women in Singapore and in many other countries in the Asia Pacific. The Women’s Heart Health Clinic is located in the National University Hospital. Its emphasis is on prevention as well as treatment. Women are treated by an all-women team comprising of a cardiologist, dietician (heart-healthy diet), occupational therapists (lifestyle management) and physiotherapist (exercise prescription).

Climate

The main variable of Singapore’s climate is not temperature or air pressure, but rainfall. Singapore’s climate can be described as a tropical climate, with an annual average temperature between 20°C - 35°C settling around 28°C. The relative humidity in the area is quite high, ranging between 70 and 90 percent, this high humidity can make the climate quite uncomfortable.

The extreme variations in rainfall are caused by the monsoons. Generally speaking, there is a dry season (June to September), and a rainy season (December to March). Precipitation is quite high, and varies from 1000-1500 mm per year.
